Snow in Lake Tekapo: Things to Do & Winter Travel Tips

There’s something pretty special about waking up to snow in Lake Tekapo.

The mountains turn white, snow settles along the lakefront, and the entire landscape looks even more spectacular than usual. For many of our guests, seeing Lake Tekapo covered in snow is one of the highlights of a winter visit.

Of course, a good snowfall can also bring a few practical questions. Are the roads open? Do you need snow chains? Is it safe to drive? And what is there to do in Lake Tekapo when it snows?

The good news is that a little preparation goes a long way.

Whether you’re already here watching the snow fall or planning a winter trip to Lake Tekapo, here’s what you need to know about making the most of the snow while travelling safely.

Does It Snow in Lake Tekapo?

Yes, it certainly does!

Snow can fall in Lake Tekapo throughout the winter months, transforming the village and surrounding Mackenzie landscape into a winter wonderland.

How much snow falls and how long it sticks around can vary considerably. Sometimes we wake up to a light dusting, while larger snowfalls can cover the village, surrounding roads and mountains.

One thing is certain – winter weather in the Mackenzie region can change quickly.

That’s why it always pays to check the latest forecast and road conditions when travelling to Lake Tekapo during winter.

What Happens if the Roads to Lake Tekapo Close?

Heavy snowfall and icy conditions can occasionally cause road closures, restrictions or delays around Lake Tekapo and the wider Mackenzie region.

The most important thing to remember? Don’t panic – and don’t rely on Google Maps alone!

Before travelling, check the latest road conditions and closures through the NZ Transport Agency Journey Planner.

Road conditions can change quickly during winter, so it’s a good idea to check before leaving and again during your journey if the weather takes a turn.

If a road is closed, never attempt to drive past closure signs or barriers. Find somewhere safe to wait, keep an eye on official updates and delay your journey until the road has reopened.

Sometimes roads may reopen with restrictions in place, so always follow the latest instructions from road authorities.

We also strongly recommend taking out comprehensive travel insurance when planning your trip to Lake Tekapo, particularly during the winter months. Unexpected weather and road closures can disrupt even the best-laid travel plans, and accommodation providers may not always be able to offer refunds for cancellations caused by weather conditions or road closures.

What Should You Do if You’re Already in Lake Tekapo?

If you’re already here and heavy snow causes road closures, the best thing you can do is stay put, stay warm and enjoy an unexpected extra dose of winter!

Avoid unnecessary driving while conditions are poor and check official road updates before heading out.

Road closures caused by snow can be temporary, with crews working to clear and treat roads as conditions allow. However, it’s important not to assume a road will reopen at a particular time.

Wait for confirmation from official sources before changing your travel plans.

And if you find yourself with some unexpected extra time in Tekapo? There are certainly worse places to be snowed in!

Do You Need Snow Chains to Drive to Lake Tekapo?

If you’re travelling around the South Island during winter, carrying snow chains is a very good idea.

Conditions around Lake Tekapo and on surrounding alpine roads can change quickly, and chains may be required on some routes when snow or ice is present.

Make sure your chains are the correct size for your vehicle and, most importantly, know how to fit them before you need to use them.

Trust us – the side of a snowy road is not the ideal place to read the instructions for the first time!

If you’re travelling in a rental vehicle, check whether snow chains are provided and make sure you understand any conditions around their use.

How to Prepare for Driving to Lake Tekapo in Winter

A little preparation can make a big difference when travelling to Lake Tekapo during winter.

Before setting off:

  • Check the latest weather forecast and road conditions.

  • Carry snow chains and know how to fit them.

  • Pack warm clothing, food and water in case you experience delays.

  • Make sure you have plenty of fuel or sufficient battery charge.

  • Allow extra time for your journey.

  • Drive to the conditions and increase your following distance.

  • Watch for ice, particularly in shaded areas and during the morning and evening.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel when conditions are particularly severe.

If you’re unsure whether it’s safe to travel, waiting for conditions to improve is always the better option.

Lake Tekapo has plenty of places to grab a coffee, breakfast, lunch or something sweet.

After all, exploring in the snow is hungry work.

Go Stargazing on a Clear Winter Night

Snowy weather doesn’t necessarily mean cloudy skies for your entire stay.

If the clouds clear, winter can be an incredible time to experience the night sky in Lake Tekapo.

The Mackenzie Basin is renowned for its dark skies, and the longer winter nights give you plenty of time to head outside and look up.

Just remember to wrap up warm.

And when we say warm, we mean really warm.

Enjoy a Snowy Night In

Sometimes the best thing to do when it’s snowing is… absolutely nothing.

If the weather outside isn’t playing ball, embrace a slower day.

Cook a warm meal, play a game, read a book, watch the snow falling outside and enjoy having nowhere else you need to be.

Holidays don’t always need a packed itinerary!
