New Zealand's highest mountain is closer than you think. Aoraki/Mount Cook is just over an hour's drive from Lake Tekapo, which makes it one of the best day trips in the South Island. Here's how to plan your Tekapo to Mt Cook day out, from the best stops along the way to the walks worth lacing up your boots for.

How far is Mt Cook from Tekapo?

Aoraki/Mount Cook Village is about 105 km from Lake Tekapo, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes of driving without stops. The road is sealed the whole way, with no mountain passes.

From Tekapo, head south-west on State Highway 8, then turn right onto State Highway 80, which follows the western shore of Lake Pukaki all the way to the village. Allow a full day so you can take your time at the lookouts and fit in a walk or two.

Before you go: fill up with fuel and grab snacks in Tekapo. Services at Mt Cook are limited, and there's no mobile coverage in parts of the national park.

Best stops on the drive from Tekapo to Mt Cook

  1. Lake Pukaki lookout – About 25 minutes from Tekapo, this is your first big "wow" moment: bright turquoise water with Aoraki/Mount Cook rising at the far end of the lake. Stretch your legs, grab a coffee and take the classic photo.
  2. Lake Pukaki shoreline walks – If you've got time, the Kettle Hole walk (about 4 km) shows off a hollow left behind by melting glacial ice.
  3. Peter's Lookout – A roadside pull-over on SH80 with a sweeping view of the road winding along Lake Pukaki towards the mountains. Pull fully off the road before you stop.
  4. Glentanner – A handy spot for a café break and scenic flights, about 20 minutes short of the village.
  5. Aoraki/Mount Cook Village – Your destination. Call into the DOC visitor centre for track updates and weather before you head out walking.

Walks to do at Aoraki/Mount Cook

  • Hooker Valley Track (10 km, 3 hours return) – The must-do. Three swing bridges, glacier views and Hooker Lake at the foot of Aoraki. It starts at the White Horse Hill car park, 5 minutes' drive from the village, and is rated easy.
  • Tasman Glacier View Track (30 minutes return) – A short, steep climb up 300+ steps to views over Tasman Lake and Haupapa/Tasman Glacier, with a side trip to the Blue Lakes. It starts at the Tasman Valley car park, about 10 minutes' drive from the village.
  • Kea Point Track (about 1 hour return) – An easy walk with Mueller Glacier and lake views, great if you're short on time.

The Hooker Valley Track starts at the White Horse Hill car park, 5 minutes' drive from the village. It's rated easy and suits most fitness levels. The Tasman Glacier View Track starts at the Tasman Valley car park, about 10 minutes' drive from the village.

Tips for your Mt Cook day trip

  • Start early. The tracks get very busy from November to April, and morning often brings the clearest mountain views.
  • Check the weather and roads. Conditions change fast in the mountains, and SH80 can close for snow in winter. Check the DOC and NZTA websites before you leave.
  • Pack layers. Bring warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and water, even on a sunny day.
  • Winter walking. Shaded parts of the Hooker Valley Track can get icy, so take microspikes in the colder months.
  • Leave the drone at home. Drones aren't allowed in the national park without a permit.
  • Have a plan B. If cloud hides the peak, the Lake Pukaki lookouts and a lazy lunch still make for a great day.
