Walks and Hikes Near Lake Tekapo
If you love a good walk - whether that’s a leisurely lakeside wander or a thigh-burning trek that makes you question your life choices -Lake Tekapo has something for you. With jaw-dropping scenery at every turn, it’s almost impossible to take a bad walk here. (Seriously, even a trip to the shop is scenic.) So, grab your hiking boots (or comfy sneakers, we don’t judge) and check out these epic walks and hikes near Tekapo.
1. Cowans Hill Walkway (Easy - 1 hour return)
This is the “Sunday morning with a coffee in hand” kind of walk. Starting near the Tekapo township, Cowans Hill Walkway is a gentle climb through tussock-covered hills, with epic views of the lake and mountains. It’s also a great one for spotting local birdlife - so if you hear a rustling in the bushes, relax, it’s probably just a fantail!
2. Peninsula Walkway (Easy - 1.5 hours return)
If you like your walks with a side of water views, this one’s for you. The Peninsula Walkway loops around the western edge of Lake Tekapo, offering amazing views of the turquoise water and the Southern Alps. It’s a prime spot for taking those “accidentally perfect” travel photos -just pretend you didn’t take 57 tries to get the angle right.
3. Mt. John Summit Track (Moderate - 2 hours return)
Ah, the famous Mt. John walk - the hike that rewards your efforts with arguably the best view in the Mackenzie. You can either tackle the steep track from the Tekapo Springs area or opt for the gentler route via the Mt. John Access Road. Either way, the panoramic views at the top are worth every drop of sweat. Bonus: There’s a café at the summit, so you can reward yourself with coffee and cake like the hiking champion you are.
4. Richmond Trail (Moderate - 3-4 hours return)
For those looking to up the challenge, the Richmond Trail offers a mix of rolling hills, tussock lands, and unbeatable views of the lake. It’s a bit more off-the-beaten-path, meaning you’ll get plenty of space to soak in the scenery without dodging selfie sticks. Bring snacks, bring water, and maybe bring a mate - because everything’s better with company (and someone to share your snacks with). This one’s a real gem if you want to feel like you have the Mackenzie Basin all to yourself.
5. Lake Alexandrina Walk (Moderate - 2-3 hours return)
If peace and quiet are what you're after, the Lake Alexandrina Walk is the perfect stroll. This picturesque lake is a favorite among locals for its glassy reflections and abundant birdlife. The easygoing track follows the shoreline, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the chance to spot trout lazily swimming beneath the surface. Unlike its bigger, busier neighbour, Lake Alexandrina has a secluded charm that makes it feel like your own little slice of paradise.
Bonus: The Church of the Good Shepherd Sunset Walk
Not all great walks have to be long and challenging! If you’re after something short, sweet, and utterly stunning, take a sunset stroll near the Church of the Good Shepherd, a 25 minute walk along the lake from us at Lakes Edge Holiday Park. The golden hues reflecting on the lake, with the famous stone church in the foreground, make for a magical experience. Plus, it’s an easy excuse to stretch your legs before heading off for a well-earned dinner in town.
Whether you’re in it for the Instagram shots or the exercise, Lake Tekapo’s walks and hikes offer something for everyone. So lace up, get outside, and enjoy one of the most spectacular landscapes New Zealand has to offer - one step at a time!
