Your Complete Packing List for Lake Tekapo

Coming to Tekapo? Good call. With epic scenery, star-filled skies, and plenty to do year-round, it’s one of those places that’s hard to leave. But before you hit the road, it’s worth knowing what to pack so you’re sorted for whatever the weather (or the day) brings. Here’s your go-to list to help you make the most of your time in Tekapo – no overpacking, no stress.

The Essentials (All Year Round)

Start here - these are the things you'll want no matter the season:

  • Decent walking shoes – There are plenty of lakeside tracks and short hikes. You’ll want something comfy.

  • Layers, layers, layers – The weather changes quickly, even in summer. Think t-shirts, hoodies, and something warm for the evenings.

  • Reusable water bottle – The air’s fresh and the views are great – you’ll be doing more walking than you think.

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses – Even on cooler or cloudy days, the UV in NZ is strong. Protect that skin.

  • Swimwear – Whether it’s the Tekapo Springs hot pools or a brave dip in the lake, you’ll want to be ready.

  • Camera or phone with space – The lake’s unreal. The stars are better. You’ll be snapping nonstop.

  • A small backpack – Handy for day trips, snacks, and those extra layers.

Summer (Dec - Feb)

Long daylight hours and warm days make summer one of the most popular times to visit. Bring:

  • Breathable clothes – Shorts, tees, a sunhat

  • Insect repellent – Just in case you’re out late or heading off-track

  • Light jacket – For breezy nights or higher altitude walks

  • Picnic blanket – Lakeside lunches hit different in summer

Autumn (Mar - May)

Cooler days, fewer crowds, and golden trees? Yes, please.

  • Warm jumper or fleece – It cools off quickly in the evenings

  • Beanie & gloves – Especially if you’re up early or out stargazing

  • Decent jacket – Windproof or insulated is ideal

  • Book or deck of cards – Autumn’s perfect for slowing down a bit

Winter (Jun - Aug)

Snow on the mountains, hot pools under the stars, and a crisp chill in the air. Winter is magic here – just come prepared.

  • Thermal base layers – They make a big difference

  • Waterproof jacket – Bonus points if it’s insulated

  • Wool socks & boots – Keep those toes toasty

  • Hat, gloves, scarf – Essentials. No arguing

  • Swimwear – Trust us, hot pools in winter are next-level

  • Snow chains – If you’re driving, especially over the Lindis or Burkes Pass

Spring (Sep - Nov)

Blooming lupins and longer days – spring’s a vibe, but it can be a mixed bag weather-wise.

  • Rain jacket – Just in case. Showers can pass through quickly

  • Layered outfits – Mornings are cold, afternoons can feel like summer

  • Camera – The flowers alone are worth the trip

  • Walking shoes with grip – Trails can still be a bit muddy from winter

Stargazing Extras

Tekapo is in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve – it’s one of the best stargazing spots in the world.

  • Blanket or mat – Lie back and take it all in

  • Warm layers – It gets cold at night, even in summer

  • Torch or headlamp (with red light setting) – So you don’t ruin your night vision

  • Binoculars or telescope – Optional, but they add a little extra to the experience

A Few Final Things

  • Your booking details – Whether it’s accommodation, stargazing tours, or hot pools, having everything handy makes life easier

  • Snacks – There are great cafes in town, but having a few of your favourites never hurts

  • Power bank or charger – Photos, maps, music – your phone will be working overtime

That’s it! With this list, you’ll be set for whatever Tekapo throws at you – clear skies, chilly nights, or spontaneous swims. Pack smart, dress for the conditions, and leave room for the memories
